I came to a realization the other day that I had no winter breeches. Now in Prince George, winter can be hella cold and snowy and I find myself looking homeless half the time because I am layered up in everything I can find. I am fortunate in that the facility in which I am boarded at has a heated arena, but sometimes even that isn’t enough to take the chill off. My mom happened to have a pair of Dublin Performance Warm-It Gel Riding Tights which made me want to buy my own.
I love the colour, while they are described as olive green, I personally wouldn’t consider them that dark. It is a much softer, lighter shade with a very subtle chevron design and light stitching. I am so used to traditional black and beige I thought it was really refreshing to have something in such a flattering colour and pattern. The fabric is very soft, with a strong, yet flexible elastic waist and ankle. The full-seat silicone gel design is in the shape of a D (Dublin’s logo) and doesn’t leave much to the imagination of the grip these tights have in the saddle. They are a mid-rise fit with secure belt loops and flattering seams down the front of the leg to contour the shape of your thighs.
Fit and Feel
I do find these breeches fit a little bit small. I tried my moms on first before I purchased my own, they were in a size 28. I am normally a 24, and these really weren’t terribly large on me. With this information in mind, I ordered a 26 and at the time fit just right. In regards to height, I am considered tall at about 5’7 – 5’8 (I feel it changes daily depending on my posture lol). These tights could be a bit longer, but for someone around the average height of 5’5, I am sure the length is perfect. My gosh, I think you guys will need sunglasses to look at that photo of bare ankle lol.
They are a very comfortable fit around my waist, as I mentioned they are very soft. They are very well made and have shown no loose threads or piling. The elastic seems to be strong and good quality, it doesn’t seem to crack like cheap elastic does when it’s being stretched. I can wear these around town and totally forget I am wearing breeches. The only time I am reminded I am not wearing normal pants is when I have to peel myself off leather seats in the truck lol.
The grip in the saddle is fantastic. These are probably one of my most grippy pairs of full-seat breeches I own and they really help to get that deep seat in the canter. Though at the same time, I don’t find that they cause me to stick in my seat when posting or jumping. As for warmth, I personally find them to be warm but my mother doesn’t find them any warmer than normal breeches. They are not fleece-lined like that many winter breeches on the market, but the material of the Dublin Performance Warm-It Gel Riding Tight is denser than that of normal breeches, so I believe that is where the warmth comes from. I tried to find the specific blend of fabric these tights are made of, but I could not find any specific information.
If I had a pretty deep-seated ride, focusing on sitting trot, canter and leg yielding; I do notice the imprint of the D-shaped silicone grips onto the soft leather seat of my saddle. I promise you it does not affect the integrity of the leather and bounces back within a matter of minutes, totally unscathed. I would have attached a photo of this, but unfortunately, my rides lately were not focused on a deep seat, but rather just staying on lol.
I think these breeches are great, and I would buy them again. It also motivates me to buy their other styles of breeches to see if they are at the same standard as these ones. They are so comfortable, non-restrictive but also very effective in the saddle. I have had these pants for about a year and the quality is the same as the day I bought them. They are very durable and unique. I have no problem wearing these around town and they are a favourite for chilly days. The price is not unreasonable, as they seem to average around $100. I purchased mine on sale from Wilton Tack at around $70. Wilton Tack also carries other styles in the Dublin line. This season they have come out with these specific tights in a really nice blue, they refer to as Navy. Because I have found my breeches to be a more rich green than the Olive colour they were stated to be, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Navy follows a similar suit.
Always get back on,
