Heated Horse is a brand I am so grateful to have been acquainted with. Not only do they make innovative products made of great quality, but it is ran by #bossbabe Anna Kessler. When I saw this cooling towel on Two Dark Bays Shoppe I was immediately intrigued, and then when I saw I got an extra through my Cavali Club – Summer Box I was thrilled.
Here is a direct quote from the Heated Horse website to give a better understanding of what the product is and how it performs:
“Perfect for summer days at the barn, and riding in the heat, our Heated Horse cooling towel is made of PVA material which retains moisture once wet but what sets us apart is that a large percentage of the composition is actually a plant extract that allows us to get ANY temperature water, even boiling hot water, from ANY source, like a bottle, fountain, river, ocean etc., actually cold & keep it cold all day long !
Even over 90 degrees, our cooling towel will remain 16 to 22 degrees cooler than the temperature where you are by simply keeping it wet at least every few hours, and giving it a wave every 15-20 minutes which reactivates the cooling process. You can keep it cool all day with NO REFRIGERATION ever needed!” (Heated Horse)
When I bought this product it was only available in blue, but since it’s release it is available in a variety of colours. It comes in a nice thick ziplock bag and a pamphlet talking about the product and how to use it.
Fit and Feel
Prior to soaking the towel, I laid hung it out on the rail to get an idea of the size. I have small hands but long fingers to give some perspective. It hangs perfectly across your shoulders.
I soaked this towel in some cold water from the hose and left it for several minutes. I followed the instructions, wrung the towel out and then gave it a shake for 30 seconds.
It does get nice and cool for sure; a really comfortable temperature to have against you skin to cool off on a hot day. It definitely maintained a cooler temperature than the weather outside. I can say that if you are looking for an ice cold temperature as if you were applying a cold compress, it did not get that cold in my experience. I do on the other hand, suspect that if you wrapped the towel around some ice and applied it as a cold compress, it would maintain a colder temperature for longer.
*Note, this product is NOT recommended or advised for medical use, but only for a cooling and comfortable cloth during hot summer days).
Since the first time I have used this cloth, I keep it in a Ziploc bag with cold water and ice and let it chill while I ride, then it is perfect for my cool down!
This cloth can be used in a variety of ways, such as around your neck, or down the back of your shirt. The great thing about this product is that it can keep you cool WITHOUT getting you soaking wet. The towel remains damp, but not enough to leave noticeable water marks on your clothing. I have also seen it used to wrap around dogs faces or necks during terrible heat waves in order to give them some relief. I can imagine it would really help cooling down your fur-baby without making them wet.
This towel is reusable and is made with anti-microbial properties. This means that it is less likely to grow mold and mildew when stored properly. Instructions say the towel can stay in a ziplock bag with water, as long as it is being used within the next few weeks. Otherwise fold when moist, let it air dry. Once air dried the towel is quite crunchy, but still easy to fold and store. Once reused, it goes back to being super soft and comfortable!
I think this product is worth it, especially if you find yourself riding outside in hot climates. It should be noted that it would also be appropriate for activities other than riding. Gardening would be another great example that this towel would be suitable in the hot sun.
Two Dark Bays Shoppe sells this cooling towel for $20 and several colours to choose from. You cant go wrong with a product like this, and it is now apart of my outdoor riding routine. I hope to see this again in Cavali Club, it was a great addition to their summer theme.
Always get back on,
